“The original belly dance”, by Jamila Salimpour

This workshop introduces students to the basic step families and cymbals that serve as the foundation of the format. Whether you are interested in certification or just want to learn about Jamila’s format, this JL1 3-day workshop is an excellent introduction.

More About Jamila Salimpour

Known as the “mother of belly dance in the States”, Jamila Salimpour sowed the seeds from which sprung both the Western cabaret and Tribal belly dance styles.

A natural musician, she developed a revolutionary teaching method for finger cymbals. Jamila was also the first to break down and give names to the steps of belly dance.

When Suhaila was working in Arabic nightclubs, she performed with some of the great Shaabi singers of the time, including Ahmed Adawiya.

In fact, she even has some Ghawazi heritage! Sha’abi, which means “popular” in Arabic, has certainly become a popular stylization in recent years. But while some trace this musical style back to the 1970s, it began even earlier than that!

In this class, we’ll learn about the history and cultural context of this earthy style, and, of course, learn common and classic Sha’abi dance moves and steps. If time allows, you will learn a choreography comprised of common Sha’abi dance moves and stylizations.

Finger cymbals optional.

More About Suhaila Salimpour

Thanks to her multi-disciplinary background, Suhaila was able to break down the belly dance technique she learnt from her mother according to the modern principles of dance and anatomy.

The result is a precise and innovative belly dance format, grounded in muscular strengthening principles and based on a solid rhythmic foundation.

This allows for incredible isolation and coordination work, that will shake your brain. A technical challenge for all dancers, no matter your level or style.

What’s the Salimpour format all about?

With dancers new to the Salimpour format, Suhaila focuses on strong technique and body posture as a fundamental base.  All students, regardless of their level, can benefit from a strong base to serve as their foundation no matter from what instructor they take and no matter what stylization they choose.  Suhaila’s format is based on a standard nomenclature of dance movements and concepts.  These days that doesn’t seem too “out of the ordinary”, but when she began teaching her format in the early 1980s, this was a revolutionary idea.  Things start to fall into place quite easily once you understand the basic elements of Suhaila’s format (posture, dance movement, specific muscular movement, timing, etc.)

Why is it so expensive?

The $900 price tag is for the *full four day* weekend of workshops. This will provide you with 21 hours of training with a master teacher. This equates to approx $43 per teaching hour – which is approximately the same rate as most other international teachers who come to our shores.

The $755 for the Suhaila Level 1 only provide you with 15 hours of training with Suhaila. This equates to about $50 per teaching hour.

The $310 for the Jamila format introduction is 6 hours of training and also equates to approx $50 per teaching hour.

Isn’t Suhaila a tribal format teacher? What will I get out of this as a Oriental dancer?

The Salimpour School formats don’t belong to any particular belly dance style. However all styles will benefit from the technical foundations that the Salimpour School provides which makes sharp moves sharper and round moves more circular.

What will I actually learn? I’m not a beginner, why do I need to do Level 1?

Level 1 is where you learn the language of the Salimpour School. You will learn dance movement, culture, music and history as a part of these workshops. While performing the drills, if Suhaila feels you have a strong understanding, she will provide additional levels of difficulty for you to work with so that you are getting the most out of the session.

I’ve done the online level 1, why do I need to do it again?

Technically, you don’t, but nothing beats an in person class with technique adjustments over an online delivery and video review. Plus, if you have truly mastered the Suhaila Level 1 training, you will be provided additional levels of difficulties so that you are working at your best.

Do I need to certify if I do the workshop?

Not at all! Many people take the Suhaila Level 1 workshop and never certify, but still get a lot of out of being there. You are more than welcome to attend, but not actually certify.

Why should I think about certifying?

  • Train to be the best dancer you can be
  • Demonstrate your commitment to preserving the highest level of quality in your art
  • Empower yourself by reaching goals in a structured and creative environment
  • Take a proactive step to move forward in your dance development
  • Receive a sense of personal accomplishment and achievement
  • Invest in your personal and/or professional development.
  • Learn body awareness and proper technique offered in a safe and structured format.
  • Progress in creativity and emotional development within a supportive, positive learning environment.
  • Build on knowledge gained in previous levels, as each subsequent level is part of a carefully crafted and consistent continuum of knowledge.
  • Learn choreography, improvisational and teaching skills.

For the Instructor & Professional dancer

  • Establish professional credentials and enhance your teaching resume.
  • Receive intelligent material for class curriculum and learn how to develop curriculum.
  • Develop as an artist, gaining the tools to anticipate and respond to change.
  • Create a continual and lifetime path for learning new things and developing skills.
  • Provide greater earning potential; the tremendous demand for Suhaila Salimpour format instruction is worldwide.

I’m only a beginner and I feel very unfit/I have a physical condition. Can I really do this training?

Yes! You are welcome to come and do as much as you can do in the workshops, and sit and be an active participant when required. Please let Suhaila and Amanda know about your injury/condition and we can help advise you during the weekend. As we will be playing cymbals/zills, you can play along from the sidelines as well as listen and participate when you can.
